Who We Are

Profile

Hello. My name is Ger Hussey. I currently work part-time in horse racing. During a term when I was a licenced trainer, I established a good working relationship with Solway Racehorses in Scotland who successfully rehomed the retiring horses I was training at the time.

Since moving away from training I concentrated on being the point of contact in Ireland for Solway Racehorses who rehome large numbers of Irish and British thoroughbreds all over the UK. Since January 2023, in excess of 120 Irish TB'S have gone on to new careers or retirement through a successful partnership with Solway Racehorses.

I founded Horse Welfare Within Racing Ireland in June 2023, shortly after an RTE TV expose of Shannonside Foods and the horrific circumstances that horses were subjected to there.

I believe that every thoroughbred regardless of racing ability, named or unnamed should have the chance at a second career or just retirement when they leave racing and that euthanasia of horses should only be carried out as a last resort and in exceptional circumstances.

I hope that, through this page I can spread the word through the racing community, racehorse owners, stable-staff and trainers, in particular, so that change can come from within the racing sector.

The Beginning

Change must take place in the mindset of those in authority namely HRI, DAFM and IHRB. In 2024 I presented a proposal,

backed up by a petition recommending the implementation of an industry funded aftercare and rehoming centre for ex-racehorses.

This proposal was rejected categorically by HRI with no good alternative suggested.

This rejection of my proposal is by no means the end of the road in my aims to ensure that there are stringent, transparent, ethical solutions to the

relentless stream of horses exiting racing for various reasons.

It is only the beginning.
