What we're all about

The Need for Aftercare

The majority of racehorses retire from racing before the age of 10. They are retired for various reasons; injury, un-suitability for racing, etc.

Most of these horses will live for another 15 - 20 years and are very adaptable to new disciplines from showjumping to eventing to dressage to just being a happy hacker.

Campaigns

Our mission at HWWR is varied.

We're striving to create change within the mindset of the racing industry focussing firstly on the governing bodies namely HRI, IHRB and DAFM.

Secondly, we need to get the message through to racehorse owners that a racehorse is not a disposable commodity to be discarded when he or she has run their last race. Owners must take full responsibility in ensuring that there is an ethical and favourable outcome for their horse, and must provide the financial support to ensure this.

Thirdly we aim to change attitudes towards aftercare from those working in the sector from trainers, stable-staff, breeders, etc.

Rehoming Thoroughbreds

HWWR work in conjunction with Solway Racehorses in Scotland who have an excellent track record in locating homes for all of the horses that we at HWWR source.

HWWR is not a registered charity, it has received no funding whatsoever to date and only receives covering expenses incurred in the collection, transport and keep of horses from Solway Racehorses.

Solway Racehorses are a longstanding business that sells ex-racehorses, having assessed temperament, career suitability and providing re-training in certain cases.
